The Search Engines That Rules The Internet: Google Vs. Bing

As more people search on smartphones for answers to their questions, Google and Microsoft are facing increasing competition in an industry where a single company is able to generate billions in revenue. According to data provided by the New York Times’ SEO experts, there are currently about 4-5 times more searches that occur at least once every two weeks than in 2022. Because users and brands can rely on different sources of information, such as websites, apps and social media, consumers will probably never have to feel restricted by how they search for answers to questions. We take a closer look at what these search engines have managed to get so right and the mistakes they made.

In a new report by WordStream, an agency specializing in web analytics, we compare these metrics to data from other major search engines in the UK, US and Germany. Using its algorithms, the expert team has discovered which keywords appear more frequently on the first page of Google and Bing compared with one another. Also, the reports include all the search terms and how long they were searched for over time.

Search Terms – The most popular terms of these two sites in both countries

These findings reveal the following characteristics of the top 10 search terms of each search engine:

Google : ‘best’ and ‘for best offer’ are among those commonly used when searching for the term ‘best car’ or ‘best pizza delivery service in NYC’.

: ‘best’ and ‘for best offer’ are among those commonly used when searching for the term ‘best car’ or ‘best pizza delivery service in NY’. Bing: ‘best’ and ‘best price’ are among those commonly searched after ‘best car’, which is clearly reflected on ‘best’ and ‘best new car’. As you can see, Bing has a very specific set of search terms, suggesting that it uses contextual keywords in order to better understand which phrases should be highlighted in search results. This particular model is also very effective because it does not force a user to make a decision based solely on words but instead focuses on the context surrounding the phrase.

Search Engines Comparison

The analysis reveals that the Google and Bing top ten search terms are similar in most aspects except for the fact that they have slightly different wording, and the phrasing may seem quite different. Whereas Google uses a lot more technical terms such as keywords, Bing has fewer  search terms such as product features and services. On Bing the word ‘best’ appears only in the form of a question. Here is how Google defines a best price for a hotel and “best place to stay in London”:

Search Trends

While Google is trying to show as many options as possible on one screen, Bing tries to create a hierarchy. You may find yourself looking at several pages at the beginning which is exactly what this site wants you to do. In comparison to Google, Bing shows fewer options in some cases, usually due to the different wording and layout of the search results pages that exist. Let’s take a closer look at what Bing gets right vs Google and how well it competes against them.

Top Ten Bing Searches For Different Keywords

The most popular searches that Bing shows for all main Google search terms:

  • Best Cars For New B-BBYs (Bing)

  • Best Pizza Delivery Places Near Me (Bing)

  • Best Online Casinos for Kids (Bing)

  • Best Hotels Where I Can Visit My Friends (Bing)

  • Best Places To Get Free Bitcoin (Bing)

  • Best Fruits At Cheapest [Bing]

  • Best Places to Watch A Live Show (Bing)

You may notice that the list doesn’t include any search terms that would require a click to go to another website. If you search for your desired location like New York, then a webpage with directions to visit all the relevant places will be visible.

Top Ten Google Searches For Various Searches

The most popular search terms on Chrome to check if someone went to the hospital:

If I Went To Hospital Last Week:

How I Googled It?

What Is That Yellow Light Inside Of Me?

What Happened When I Did Nothing At All Today?

What Wasn’t There When I Got Sick?

What was the Most Popular Place To Buy Used Books [Bing]

These two searches also show the most common phrases:

Where Do I See His Eyes?

Where’s More Than Two Holes On One Body Part?

Where did my friends say I looked great today?

How Did They Laugh About It?

The result that comes up in Google is also a good indication of his/her confidence and the success he/she achieved.

Summary of this

The above statistics indicate that even though Google offers a wider range of choices, Bing has actually performed very poorly in Google searches compared with Bing. In fact, Bing has been unable to come close to matching how large of a  Bing has to move towards becoming a bit more strategic in order to survive.
